here's a refresher: a constructive review!

alright, i noticed in the reviews a lot of people just complain and complain about little issues (the nail!). i personally did finish the game, and so im gonna give you advice on how you couldve avoided a lot of that angry complaining.

-the nail behind the bed: the reason people couldnt find it is because A. the place to click to get behind the bed was rather small, B. the cursor didnt change (as far as i remember) when you did find it, so you pretty much had to click randomly, and most of all, C. the walkthrough, which solved most little problems that people mightve had (including myself) gave a misleading description of the nail's location. "...wall behind the bed" gives the impression that its somewhere on one of the two large stone walls cornering the bed. and so after lots and lots of frustrated clicking people just get fed up and give up. even if the nail is hard to find, the walkthrough should have specified something like "stuck in the part of the wall concealed by the bed."

-another problem people had, though which is covered in the walkthrough, is giving Jason White the watch. the problem here is that for some reason, any interaction with Jason has to happen with his head. I personally also found this obnoxious, and had to go to the walkthrough to figure it out. just make all of Jason interactable and itd be much easier.

-some people found the gun fight rather hard. the reasoning here is probly that its not made clear that you can hide by moving to the right. although hiding isnt necessary to win, knowing that you can would make things a lot easier.

some things i personally thought could be better:

-in the last room, the colored chips are badly placed. one on the ceiling, one on the floor, it just seems like if you were to treat this situation as somewhat realistic, the guy would actually hide them. the only reason that theyre hard to find here is that theres no way of knowing you can look up or down. theres no arrow that pops up when you get near the edge of the screen, no change in the cursor, you just have to guess and click randomly. i just wish they had been in smart hiding places, like hidden behind mcneely, or maybe in another one of those concealed hole-in-the-walls. the clock one is good though, thats what you should have gone for for the other two.

-in the second room, i went crazy trying to get the portrait over the lamp. getting the lamp in, turning it on, getting the nail in, hitting it in, were all fine. although it seemed strange that you used the toilet seat, but whatever. but even though the portrait was very clearly what you needed, i kept trying to just click on the lamp to put the portrait on. maybe when you have the portrait selected, clicking on the lamp should have the same effect as the wall. i dunno, just a peeve of mine.

Overall, i dont deny this is a rather nicely made game. the animation is pretty lazy most of the time (with the people that is, everything else is great), but the story line is fabulous. cant wait to see what you come up with next!

pretty good, just needs to be fixed up.

overall, nice job. the main problem is that the trees become enormous when they get close up, to the point where its ridiculously difficult to avoid them. id say make them a little easier to avoid, but give way fewer lives. but on the plus side...
this style of game was a great choice, gives a nice 3d effect, and its a definite classic. and the added idea of a chainsaw makes things a little more interesting. so great job there, and the visuals werent horrible (though the coins and trees could both look a lot less boring). so id say nice job, fix the tree problem and its a 3/5.

absolutely love it, im obsessed, but theres a bug

im sure you know how much people, myself included, love this game, so ill cut to the chase. theres this serious bug that sometimes happens in the middle of battle, if you have out a long-range weapon. at the start of the battle, if you put the mouse on either of the attacks (bombard or snipe), and you have very high 'attack' (though im not sure if the attack is relevant, i just know i always have it pretty high when this happens), then the percentage chance of hitting says 'undefined %'. the real problem is, if you then click either of these attacks, the options go away, then nothing happens. so the game is just at a standstill, and the only way to get out is to close the window and start over. this is very frustrating because almost every time ive gotten past the first tournament ive hit this bug. please try to fix it soon, and until then ill just try to make sure to spot the bug before i click. and if/when this is fixed, you can either pm me or just respond to this.
and thanks again for making such an awesome game! (though 'crusaders' didnt quite do it for me like this did)

nice, somewhat difficult, but doable

i thought it was well done, with good drawings, and the sprites flying out were a nice touch. one problem that i should point out is that after the colored boxes are gone, and the door is open, its still possible that the player has accidentally sealed the exit with blank blocs. this happened to me, and while i like this extra element of difficulty, the main problem is that once the door is open you cant restart the level. so i was forced to go back to the main menu and start all over again. just a small issue, otherwise its a great game, i like it.

very nice

i have seen this before, but i still like it none the less. and you put plenty of interesting things in there, like the kirby bot. but just one note, on level 9, you clearly set up some elaborate plan, but it falls flat because you can just go right then down right above the star and youre done.

nice job though, keep it up.

Sunsharior responds:

I did this on purpose. The buttons are all decoys. It a trap!

It on of the moment when a player start thinking for 5 minutes and notice the path at the last second and finaly think "oh it was pretty easy actualy".

finally!

god, im so glad to finally see a submission to the rock out contest that is truly taking an original spin on it (besides perhaps spectrum, but... lets face it, that game's only plus side is the nice visuals). great job, you took the basic idea of a shooter, and really made it great. i like that it still relates to rhythm, but at the same time doesnt rely on it. its a great game, some great powerups really keep it interesting, the only possible note i could give you for improvement is that the powerups are hard to remember. maybe when the powerup is picked up, some reminder message could pop up in really big letters over the screen. especially with the ram one, i kept forgetting what it was so i wasnt sure what to do. oh, and i just gotta note that it was really smart of you to make all the records explode when you die, cuz otherwise youd just get swarmed. and last of all, just wanna mention that i really liked the look of the guitar with its neck bendy like that. it definitely bypassed the stiff, rigid look that would have resulted otherwise.

overall, awesome, i think this definitely deserves to be in the top ten for the contest.

LesPaulPlayer responds:

thanks very much for your positive and in depth review. I'll add in a little reminder for the powerups soon.

very nice

i like your recreation, and unlike that other guy recognize that this is not plagarism. it would be better described as a tribute, and a well done one at that. although lacking detail (of course, the detail would take a lot longer), it was still nicely done. although i noticed adams arm slightly interesected his knee. and i have no idea what the hidden brain is. but overal great job.

nicely done but plenty of problems

overall i enjoyed it. nice concept, nice music, decent drawings, but i noticed several issues that really cut down on the gamplay value:
1. after killing a zombie, as he fades away he keeps coming towards you, and while he's fading he can still hurt you. this is a serious problem, because if youre right in front of a guy or surrounded or seomthing (especially on the last zombie screen, with the five or so really fast guys), then even when you shoot a guy, he will often still hurt you, making survival really difficult. and when the zombies are fast, i found i had to keep moving to avoid them, and so i would often run straight into them after i shot them.
2. the shooting system is really difficult. if your far away, the zombies are almost impossible to hit, because the exact right angle is really hard to obtain in the time youve got until they reach you. and if your close to the zombie, even if you hit them, theres the problem mentioned above, which will lead to you getting hurt anyway.
3. the uzi/machine gun/whatever (second gun) made the sound as if it were shooting rapidly, but the bullets came equally fast. that just seemed strange to me.
4.spelling errors, but you already knew that.
5. after beating all the zombies, i got to the doctor, where (a) the text disappeared too fast to read (maybe have the player press space to move on), and (b) because of said unreadable text, my reaction to a guy coming at me with a gun was to shoot him, which of course gave me a game over, which is VERY frustrating at the last screen, where i have nothing left to kill, but lose simply because i accidentally shot my doctor. maybe give him more health, and a warning, so the player realizes after a shot or two that its a bad idea?

besides all criticisms mentioned above, i still thought it was a great game, and would love to see more, hopefully of higher quality. keep up the good work!

Massivedog responds:

Thanks for the reviwe. and yeah i got some spelling mistakes but thats becuse im from another country.and yeah its possible that a Episode 2 is coming. See ya!!

lacking graphics, gut great game!

while i dont argue that the animation and graphics in general were fairly low quality, and all around not very pretty to look at, id like to give you the credit of making a fun, challenging, interesting game. while it is reminiscent of frogger, it brings whole new elements to the idea. the idea of going out and collecting pieces makes it very entertaining. however, the entire time i never used the farthest row of iceburgs. the way the game is set up, you have no reason to go farther than the first couple rows, and maybe occasionally the third. i think there should have been another landing at the bottom of the screen, and that would be perhaps where the character started, trying to get to his house up top while collecting bricks. but other than that, the obstacles, enemies (ahh! polar bear!), and overall concept worked very well. please keep making more games, id love to see some other ideas you could work with. although do see if you can do a little better job with the drawings, but otherwise, great! keep it up!

make more, make better

it looks like you used this as a test for multiplayer games, and i think you can do much better. this game was choppy and uninteresting, and not too exciting. you should put more work into the game concept before creating it, because youre definitely heading somewhere good. but yeah, make more multiplayer games.
