Solid piece of work. The main thing that threw me off was the odd usage of facial expressions. For a fairly serious piece, the expressions often seemed overly goofy. I guess it was nice that it didn't feel melodramatic, but it felt like there could be a better middle ground.

Also the ending was a good idea, but its presentation felt more like an afterthought. Maybe it could've been drawn out a little more, to let it sink in?

Overall though, nice job!

TaraGraphika responds:

Thank you for givin' the time to write a review, It seems that I need to work more in delivering a solid character arc. Story and visually. I love how just about everybody agree on the ending but it was too abrupt. Definitely need some time to sink in more into the character.

Always grateful there are people out there who give me a helping hand. Love feedbacks and you!

Great, but not yet Professional..

I enjoyed the writing of this cartoon a lot, and see a lot of potential for it to get picked up (with some talented animators and voice actors on board), but there are a few things I think would need to change. First of all, the references to pokemon and video games, while entirely acceptable in the NG community, would feel very out of place and somewhat childish (sorry, but true) as part of a real network show. Second, while the characters were all around funny (like the alcoholic lions), they all would need a bit more flushing out. I can't help comparing this heavily to Venture Bros. (like you mentioned in your post), and I think just as each VB character, regardless of significance or screen time (the monarch minions pair, etc) has a distinct humor-driven personality, I think each of your minor characters (the lions, even the sidekick monkey, especially his darker friend helping with the suitcase) needs to be more defined. If you, for yourself, were to write extensive character descriptions for each, and then had those more complex characters reflected in the dialogue, it would make the cartoon overall much funnier.

Best of luck getting a crew and getting the show picked up! I think you'll do great.

smirkstudios responds:

Wow, I must say... very nice review! One of the best I've seen!

You're right on just about everything. The Nintendo references, much like the characters and dialog, need to be sprinkled into the coming scripts with more taste and specifics in order to make it anywhere past NG.

As far as the characters go, believe this: This pilot was a test of only a handful of the characters that the actual series will premiere. I have re-written the character descriptions and individual hooks for them, and you will be very happy when Episode 1 of Primetime Primate debuts.

Thanks for the review!

welll.. its something

clearly this isn't the most impressive flash. amateur drawings, basic, cliche premise, etc. but i will say you have a decent understanding of shadow, perspective, and overall camera work which the average animator trying to make a flash like this shows no knowledge of. so uh, its decent. the flash could still stand to be improved in, well, everything. but youve got something to start on. right now it seems more like an outline for an actual decent flash. (besides the lack of plot that is.)

keep trying.

Knight-mare responds:

ok I will try to improve, its one of my first animations so understand

thnks

You really pulled it off... for the most part.

As soon as the main menu, you really established what you seemed to be going for, and I was practically sold already. It definitely has that artsy-fartsy look as you call it, which i totally dug right away. But when I actually watched it, I kind of went back and forth with my opinion, because some parts really stuck to that original idea, and nailed it, while others (ahem, turtleco) kinda killed the mood for me. Especially that thing with the xbox 360... way too.. i dunno materialistic and light hearted i guess. totally lacked the weird, the creepy, the trippy, or the artsy qualities of most of the other parts. i guess you cant really get around the way styles are going to vary in a collab, but having them at least be on the same page is pretty important to me. so i give you a big fat 5 for most of the collab, but a 2 for the inconsistent parts. so thats more or less a 4 overall. aka an 8/10.

LenardNotLenny responds:

I agree with that for the most part, but I though it was cool having everything so different.

fuck youre awesome

emily.... dear god emily, you.. are.. amazing.

what the fuck was this cartoon about? fuck if i know. you you know what? it was awesome. pure, disgusting, filthy, awesome. and i love it.

i dont understand you. i dont think anyone understands you. i dont know if you understand yourself. but none of that matters, because you rock my world.

this flash was epic in the most brain-bursting way that has ever been conceived. you are officially the shit.

well... wow.

That was... intense. I definitely was not expecting that, although in some twisted way I enjoyed it. I almost didn't like it, because the gore seemed really excessive at times, but then there would be a moment that made it seem artistic, like a shot from outside the chamber, or the gerbils on opium for contrast. Then it seemed in some bigger way to be almost making a statement about animal testing, yet still mainly being about the fucking ridiculous, and quite literal, blood bath.

So while I'm pretty sure the main purpose of this was to be a gore-fest, the fact that it came off as somewhat more than that made up for it. So uh... good job. I think.

ApocalypseCartoons responds:

yeah, it was all about the blood. but those little moments give it perspective. it's always fun to play with perspective. oh, and limits. those are fun to step on too.

a moody, interesting piece of work

I enjoy this piece for its atmosphere, as you said, but not necessarily its message. i spend a lot of time thinking about things such as the ultimate meaning of life, and in my opinion it really comes down to the fact that despite the clockwork layout that controls our lives in some ways, there is no grand, greater purpose (unless you find religion, in which case i envy you for being able to believe in something so illogical, because it does give you some sort of goal.) so really besides religion life is about being happy as often as you can, and this film leaves out all those thing people do that make every day somehow unique, even in a minute way. like talking with someone you dont normally, or seeing a shocking sight. another step backward makes you realize that there are always plenty of larger-scale fluctuations that drastically change several lives every day. a car accident, a 'generous' atm, a diagnosed illness, a big boom in a small company. the big picture (using the term "big" loosely) is always changing. and taking a farther step back its easy to see how secluded you are, in some little town somewhere, finding nothing exciting or new in your own life, no drastic changes or winding path, you probly feel very much like a fish in a sea. but first look at the rest of america. then at canada, mexico, then the rest of the world, and how your anthill life is just one piece of the capitalist system of living, and has very little global relevance. so while im sure there are people who very much identify with this, its not exactly the definition of life. but none of this means im insulted or annoyed at you or your flash for this point of view, its just less universal than you portray it to be. despite all of that, its a very mixed-media well planned flash with a very nice combination of somewhat droning, but enjoyable music. the foggy video and the poorly sketched animation combine for a nice small-town blues feeling, which is really where this flash seems to land. i enjoyed it, as you seem to have enjoyed making it, and i really do like your style. not to mention im madly in love with experimental stuff. please do make more stuff like this, but id like to see a more thought-out message in a flash of yours, one that takes a bit to figure out, and really says something that people are likely to not have thought of. nice work overall.

notorious responds:

wow you're pretty damn smart for writing all of that

also i like your approach towards religion lmao

you wrote a lot and it's hard just to grasp quite everything you said first time reading, but i do get your point. I know we've got tons of different cultures, traditions, etc. I really just intended this to set a message, and to be memorable.

Thanks for the good review!

now THATS a collab!

definitely the best concept for a collab ive seen in a while. simple, but truly inspiring. personally, i think faces are more fun and creative to draw than anything else, and to see a collab of people getting funky with this in mind really does it for me. way to go guys, lets see another.

TheBoogley responds:

That's exactly what I think about faces... you can see everything in a face. Everything and nothing.

liked it, except audio

i thought it was ok, kinda funny but not hilarious. but as you know the audio was bad. what it sounded like to me was that the 'narrator' voice was so deep it was barely audible and not understandable at all. i think you just overdid it with the deep, dramatic voice, and it become muttled. and the 'taxi!' voice was just way too high and squeaky, it didnt sound like a real person at all, which definitely took away from the idea that people were getting run over (and more) by the taxi, since the obnoxious voice made you kinda want them to get hit.

aap responds:

Hmm, okay, maybe you're right. Thanks for writing this review.

very nice, just one question.

i really like this style, I think someone hit it right on earlier with the Chuck Jones comment. simple humor, but absolutely great to watch. Me encanta! and if you dont speak spanish, well it just down right kicks some serious ass. I wasnt expecting the ending at all, but it was absolutely perfect. Plus that added little random laughing guy at the end cracked me up. only comment would be to clean it up a little, many of the frames had these abnormally thick borders around the characters that looked half stylized, and half just kinda messy. But still, loved it. And i especially loved that you put some effort into the credits, i actually really enjoyed watching them. theyre so musical! oh and that question i mentioned... why am i in the credits? 'Special thanks to: ...Max Porter...'. its cool and all but... do i know you?

ActiveObjectX responds:

Ah, sorry, it's referring to a different Max Porter. The Max Porter in that I refer to in the credits helped with actually making the movie so...it's not you :(

...nothing like taking 2 years to answer a fans question!
