superbly written

i believe you wrote somewhere that your intention in this black and white theater series was to develop your writing skills. well i must say if thats so, right here is proof that you reached that goal and then some. this is one of the most interesting, amusing, fascinating, human, well-written pieces of flash ive seen in a long time. this is not the first time ive watched it, but it hasnt lost any interest from me, and it really maintains the artistic sheen it had the first time. amazing job.

You could really be making something good.

This review is meant both for this movie and what I've seen of your work in general. You tend to pursue a subject matter or storyline that is of a more serious nature, relating to brutal deaths, childhood beatings, the horrible side of people, etc., but frequently try to turn it into a joke. I usually start off liking your flashes, like this one, getting drawn into the emotion of the flash and getting connected to the characters, but then you just completely ruin it by trying to make it humorous. While i could possibly see that being purposeful, like in this one, which turned just disgustingly depressing the instant the man fell, it really just screws with your audience in an unpleasant way. it makes most of your flashes much more difficult to enjoy. on the other hand, flashes like coffee break and ugly duck are BRILLIANT and sick and twisted in a very directed way. they start that way and they end that way, satisfying the viewer with exactly what they were expecting, yet shocking them all the same.
So please stick with those disturbing storylines, and just leave the attempted humor out of it. Youll go a lot farther, i promise you.

Could've been really great, I think

From what I could tell, this was mostly a great flash: great drawings, decent animation, pretty funny premise. But i couldn't hear a word the guy was saying! Not only was the voice acting just badly done, but it was so soft, especially in comparison to the music, that i couldnt understand it. I had to turn the sound all the way up to even kind of hear it, but then the music basically covered it up. If you had just done a better job with voice acting, I probably would've given this a 10/5. But still enjoyed the drawings and all that, so nice job for the most part.

Wow this is just overflowing with potential

This is some amazing work. The animation, the art, its all extremely well done. Youve really got to do something about the ADD, cuz if you could make a series using all those characters, those landscapes, those monsters, itd be famous in no time.

aw and i was expecting so much more!

i really thought this was going to be a fantastic flash. don't get me wrong, the animation and concept were both original and well-done, but it's like you started an idea and just gave up on it. it needs to be at least 5 times this length (preferably much longer) to be a decent flash. but ill still give you points for the skill exhibited here.

Dear God, utterly boring.

Ok maybe slightly amusing, but that flash had so many down points it kills me. It was amazingly slow-paced, the animation was pretty lacking (decent but nothing special), and most of the sound effects were cheesy and kinda obnoxious. The plot wasn't very interesting or well put together (It got a little more interesting when he somehow went to the medieval ages), and was emphasized by the fact that every little task was drawn out to the extreme. When he was going up the tree, yo
u really only needed a few pencils in normal time to demonstrate what he was doing, then a brief sped up version or an "a little later" or something to get him to the top. And the troll chase in the medieval era just kept going and going. Really, it just needed to be hurried up, especially being a chase and all.
As a more general comment, I thought a lot of the ways he used his magical octahedron werent nearly as creative as i was hoping. Its a very unique figure, but that was never really tapped into. He could fly people places (the princess, the man at sea) and use it as a kite (which seemed kinda random and sort of a time waster before his adventures) and somehow turn it into a mirror to light a fire, which btw doesnt even make sense. Youd need a magnifying glass, and even so the use of it as a mirror once again didnt use its natural uniqueness at all. It didnt start as a reflective object, but you just gave it that characteristic to make it useful. In that case its being an octahedron was completely irrelevant, which is true of many of the cases as ive said before.
Overall, this flash lacked in style, ingenuity, pace, entertainment, and just about everything. It was a kinda sweet (as in touching) flash overall, but it was just so badly written and put together that I couldn't really enjoy it. You clearly have some sort of potential, but focus less on quantity and more on quality.

well... wow.

That was... intense. I definitely was not expecting that, although in some twisted way I enjoyed it. I almost didn't like it, because the gore seemed really excessive at times, but then there would be a moment that made it seem artistic, like a shot from outside the chamber, or the gerbils on opium for contrast. Then it seemed in some bigger way to be almost making a statement about animal testing, yet still mainly being about the fucking ridiculous, and quite literal, blood bath.

So while I'm pretty sure the main purpose of this was to be a gore-fest, the fact that it came off as somewhat more than that made up for it. So uh... good job. I think.

ApocalypseCartoons responds:

yeah, it was all about the blood. but those little moments give it perspective. it's always fun to play with perspective. oh, and limits. those are fun to step on too.

wow, incredible

this here is some professional grade animation! im amazed by how nonchalantly you talk about it on the loading screen, this looks like it must have taken a lifetime to make. you could definitely work for disney, im just amazed youre not getting paid for this! (well not yet anyway, im sure youll make a monthly if you submit this as a series.)

seek employment!

a moody, interesting piece of work

I enjoy this piece for its atmosphere, as you said, but not necessarily its message. i spend a lot of time thinking about things such as the ultimate meaning of life, and in my opinion it really comes down to the fact that despite the clockwork layout that controls our lives in some ways, there is no grand, greater purpose (unless you find religion, in which case i envy you for being able to believe in something so illogical, because it does give you some sort of goal.) so really besides religion life is about being happy as often as you can, and this film leaves out all those thing people do that make every day somehow unique, even in a minute way. like talking with someone you dont normally, or seeing a shocking sight. another step backward makes you realize that there are always plenty of larger-scale fluctuations that drastically change several lives every day. a car accident, a 'generous' atm, a diagnosed illness, a big boom in a small company. the big picture (using the term "big" loosely) is always changing. and taking a farther step back its easy to see how secluded you are, in some little town somewhere, finding nothing exciting or new in your own life, no drastic changes or winding path, you probly feel very much like a fish in a sea. but first look at the rest of america. then at canada, mexico, then the rest of the world, and how your anthill life is just one piece of the capitalist system of living, and has very little global relevance. so while im sure there are people who very much identify with this, its not exactly the definition of life. but none of this means im insulted or annoyed at you or your flash for this point of view, its just less universal than you portray it to be. despite all of that, its a very mixed-media well planned flash with a very nice combination of somewhat droning, but enjoyable music. the foggy video and the poorly sketched animation combine for a nice small-town blues feeling, which is really where this flash seems to land. i enjoyed it, as you seem to have enjoyed making it, and i really do like your style. not to mention im madly in love with experimental stuff. please do make more stuff like this, but id like to see a more thought-out message in a flash of yours, one that takes a bit to figure out, and really says something that people are likely to not have thought of. nice work overall.

notorious responds:

wow you're pretty damn smart for writing all of that

also i like your approach towards religion lmao

you wrote a lot and it's hard just to grasp quite everything you said first time reading, but i do get your point. I know we've got tons of different cultures, traditions, etc. I really just intended this to set a message, and to be memorable.

Thanks for the good review!

now THATS a collab!

definitely the best concept for a collab ive seen in a while. simple, but truly inspiring. personally, i think faces are more fun and creative to draw than anything else, and to see a collab of people getting funky with this in mind really does it for me. way to go guys, lets see another.

TheBoogley responds:

That's exactly what I think about faces... you can see everything in a face. Everything and nothing.
